This experimental class gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of mediums through the pages of a sketchbook. Using materials like watercolors, pens, sumi ink, acrylic ink, pastels, and more, students will create sketchbook pages guided by a range of prompts — blending art-making, journaling, and open-ended experimentation.
This class is a great fit for students who are curious about starting or deepening a sketchbook practice. Students will work with abstract mark making, experimental techniques, and writing prompts, and will also be led through gestural caricatures/people studies, still life studies and landscape basics. The class will touch on how to use photo references and drawing from life to build out a personal sketchbook. The instructor will offer demonstrations and brief lessons, with most of class spent learning through hands-on experience.
Students will purchase their own sketchbook to bring to class. All other art materials will be provided for use each session. Students are also welcome to bring in materials of their own to explore, and are encouraged to purchase any favorites they discover along the way.
