In this mixed levels class designed around drawing portraits, students will build foundational skills needed and expand their understanding of human faces. We will use a variety of black & white and color drawing mediums to explore the structure and expression of the human face. Students will develop skills in proportion, facial features, anatomy, value, and form, all within the context of portraiture. In addition to reference studies, self portraits, and drawing from images, students will experiment with mark-making and creative approaches to drawing portraits.
We’ll work from photo references and mirrors (for self-portraits) focusing on capturing character and likeness through line, shape, light, and shadow.
The instructor will provide demonstrations and brief lessons, with most of the class dedicated to hands-on practice in our supportive studio environment. This class is suited for both students who have no drawing experience and those with some experience who are ready to dive into portraits. Come join us and discover the art of portrait drawing!
Students will purchase their own materials. This class has an additional small studio fee for some shared studio materials.
